HYPERGRID DRAMA WTF

Posted in metropolis grid, opensim, osgrid at 4:12 am by Chav Paderborn

As of time of writing, hypergrid connections have been cut between OSGrid and Metropolis Grid. The cited reason is someone in a child av “taunting” OSG admins, along with people (unnamed) soliciting people for a move to MG from OSG. Various reasons exist to be a bit uncertain about this, but that’s what they said and so we’ve been cut off from OSGrid. If true it seems quite OTT to cut off the entire connection, no?

So we are all a bit bemused. Don’t really know what will happen, whether the grids will ever again be connected to each other.

mesh omg

With Chavland finished I’ve started on another city, this time in mesh. So I’ve been learning new things as I go along. Materials, physics, etc. It’s nice to be able to experiment without it costing a shedload in upload fees.

So anyway, that.

Chavland!

As you can see, I have actually textured the build with actual textures instead of just blankness. I think it’s looking a bit nicer now. It’s not finished. obvs. Needs more industry and creepiness. This is it with fancy windlight looking a bit dark. Basically it’s all grey but varying greys. I got some open source textures and greyed them. Dunno if I want it to get too cyberpunk, I think that would be asking a lot of my buildling skillz anyway.

Permissions and Theftage

Posted in my own stuff, opensim, osgrid at 5:58 am by Chav Paderborn

I’ve seen a couple of people justify importing SL content with the logic that “I already bought it, it’s mine now.” Turns out I have extensive thoughts on this matter!

We never in SL got into the habit of saying whether we were okay with content being ported over to other grids. I’ve been asked a couple of times and I’ve said yes but how many people just didn’t ask me? I will never know, I suppose. But what I made on SL I intended for use in SL, with the permissions as a “licence” to mod and copy or whatever. Sometimes I’d change perms for someone, but mostly it’s mod/copy or an old full perms freebie. Porting it over to another grid without asking is a bit like reselling freebies — sure you can *do* it, but it’s not what the creator intended and they might be upset if they found out.

Another issue – a huge one – is that when people bring stuff over for personal use they end up with it full perms. And then they pass it onto a friend without changing perms, just an oversight or so I’m willing to believe. Voila, a new freebie is in the world.

It’s easier to spot stolen/whatever content on OSgrid because I know what shops aren’t there. There’s no way that chick could have legit got those Maitryea boots on OSG, nor that Curio skin. Truth hair? Nope. None of those things was ever intended to leave SL, even if you paid for it. For one thing? Go look at the prices on places like Turbosquid. SL content is so cheap because it’s limited use, something that can/should only be used within SL. Frankly I’d have charged you a lot more for something you could take anywhere and give to all your friends. (It’d be nice to have a permissions checkbox on whether taking stuff to another grid was okay, wouldn’t it? Because then we’d know who didn’t mind. Then, I suspect, prices would go up or people would just tick “No taking this to another grid, damn you!”) In SL I have no idea if something is nicked because it *could* be real and I’d have to inspect it to check. Idk, do some people go round inspecting everything on the off-chance?

And OSgrid doesn’t *need* SL content anyway. It holds us back because we don’t have to frantically make our own hair and skins. It confuses the freebie-commerce because we can’t tell the provenance of a free item so should we pass it on or not? Just because it’s full perms *now* doesn’t mean it always was.  So we get good-looking noobs who ported over their avatars but then what? Do they keep bringing stuff over or do they support the local “economy”?

Me? If it was free and full perms then do what you want with it, but it’d be nice to let me know. Otherwise ask and I’ll think about it. I mean I don’t even have all my *own* content on OSG in case it competes with itself in SL somehow. In case people get mad at me or something.

Those were my extensive thoughts.

I don’t entirely know why Chav is looking a bit cyberpunk/Tank Girl today. It just sort of happened. Lookit mah bad mesh hair! Hair turns out to be v difficult, lots of effort and patience and I don’t have much patience. Is impatient person. Snapshot taken in one of the Sandbox Plazas. Other than the modded Eloh Starlight skin she is being all home-made today. This is what happens when there isn’t all that much stuffs to buy in the game. NEEDS ALL THE THINGS. Well there is probably more stuff than I realise, I haven’t had too much of a look round yet.

I suppose it’d be hard to switch to OSgrid if you were making decent spacebux in SL, because you’re used to being financially compensated for your work. I have discovered that I feel more happy giving stuff away that I make than making hardly much spacebux. It’s working for free or working for pennies and free comes with less pressure and more of a sense of freedom to make whatever the feck you want. Less of this chasing the few spacebux, more of the actual crafting which has always been the fun bit innit.

Welp, have sold my SL mainland, downgraded to free account, told peeps that I am leaving Babbage. So that’s me with not many SL commitments beyond the odd spot of customer service for Marketplace sales. Feel less stressed by it all now.

I only made hair cos there isn’t much of it made on OSgrid, possibly as suggested it is because it’s lots of effort for no moneys. It’s not that there’s no reward, but it’s accomplishment and a feeling of belonging to something. Everyone wants to belong to something, its’s the social instinct. Idk if I will ever manage decent hair, but I am making a few bad/weird styles for Chav since she’s not that prettylike/realistic anyway. There’s a way to do it with bezier curves, but they just confuse me even after watching tutorial vids. Needs to learn more Blender, I suppose. Anyway if you want to make hair for free then pls visit OSgrid where we are suffering a national hairs shortage.

Sneak Peek

Here’s a bit of what I’ve been building on OSgrid. It’s a dystopian 1984-style city-state. Or something. Basically the dictatorship of Chav. It’s irony, I swear. And no, it’s not unrezzed, those are the actual textures. I used blank textures for the main architecture, partly for lag and partly because it seemed to fit the them. It is a grey place. Essentially it’s a shopping centre with a backstory and props. I am especially pleased with the news stand and the polling station.

It’s on a hosted sim, so should be there 24/7 even when I’m not awake. Couldn’t possibly have done anything like this on SL with the tier prices there. Actually I haven’t used all that many prims yet, but it’s a question of space. Needs more decoration and props, shall have to think what stuff to put in it. But most of it is one texture and four colours, three of which are shades of grey. Oh, and there’s glow. Never been a fan of glow in builds but I like to think it adds something to this one. So far the architecture is all normal prims, for various reasons, and it’s quite nice to be building like that again. I sort of forgot how but it’s coming back like when a fish rides a bicycle. Been building mostly in sandboxes for the occasional bit of company.

Anyway, it will have clothes and shoes and furnitures and any other stuff that I make. Freeeeee stufffffff.

osgrid building

Posted in my own stuff, osgrid at 9:51 am by Chav Paderborn

I appear to be building a sim. With mostly blank textures and four colours. Shush, it makes sense in my head. We’ll call it “avant garde” or something. Pics and such if/when I get it finished.

In other news, shoes! I made successful shoes! In that they go on your feet and don’t look too boxy! Part of the purpose of this blog is so I have a bit of a record of what I’ve made and how I’ve improved over time, so there will probably be pics even though I ain’t even sure if I’ll upload them to SL yet. Have sold off my mainland and need to sort out leaving Babbage. And then I might just go down to basic because it doesn’t seem worth it for just the premium sandboxes, useful though those are. There was something else I needed to do but I forget what it was. Basically am happy with my move to OSgrid, regardless of occasional technical or social bugs. It’s nice there, it’s not too busy and it doesn’t charge me upload fees. Those 10Ls add up fast, you know.

I have to go now and make more creepily blank buildings. Damn I hate making buildings. I just like decorating and filling them with crap. One question is whether/how to enclose the build. I shall ponder that question.

Virtual

Made myself a hat and some clothes on OSgrid. I even mades shoes! Sadly hair is beyond me.

I feel quite settled, I’m seeing about renting a properly-hosted sim for not very much, and I have a shop in Wright Plaza. Truly, I have arrived. I have met people and friended them and it’s all very nice and exciting. From now on new stuff will probably only go on OSgrid, except I might sell some meshes as templates for to pay the spacerent in SL. Am sort of scaling back on my commitments to SL but not actually leaving as such. I’m not flouncing.

I’ve sort of gone into creative overdrive with the excitement of a new project and with all the things I need to make simply to have them in my inventory. Clothes are needed, for instance. I have so many clothes in SL, I need at least too many outfits on OSgrid as well. We shall see if people like my stuff there or are just being polite. I suppose I will know if I see something of mine when I’m out and about.

It’s odd, in that you’d think all the competition in SL would make me up my game and be less efforty with OSgrid stuff, but I find now that it just has to be “good enough” that I want it to be better and more amazin. Less of my usual “oh, it’ll do” attitude, I think. It feels more worthwhile to be making things that people might actually obtain and use. It’s a bit like the old hobo days of full perm freebies in Calleta. It’s nice to rediscover that feeling.
